I am a PhD student at the University of Sheffield. I have recently handed in my long book of work, which will soon be marked and I will have an exam.
My work involved taking old waste powders, like metal sawdust called swarf, and turning it into wire using a machine called a Conform machine. The machine is big and noisy and gets as hot as 1000 degrees celsius! What comes out of the end is a long stick of titanium, which we can use to make new things.
I have spent time in the lab, testing the material I have made and playing with the powders that I use. I spend a lot of time at my computer, writing papers and reports or making new drawings.
I also spent time sharing my knowledge at big conferences including one in France and one in Hungary! (A conference is where scientists share all the work they have been doing, like a show-and-tell)
I also got to teach younger students how to test materials or do chemistry experiments!

My Typical Day:
I would get up early and head for the long bus to the University. Then I get all of my safety clothing including goggles and a lab coat and put them on to go into the lab! Here, I run experiments on metals and powders!

My day changes a lot. When I was in the lab, I would get up at 8 am and walk for my bus (like I’m going to school!). I would get to the University and make a big cup of coffee to start my day. The office would be quiet, so I turn on all the lights and open up the blinds. Then I sit at my desk and start working on my computer. Often people would turn up to my desk to ask me questions or get some help. Then I’d go to my lab equipment and get some tests done. Sometimes I would have to teach some students in the afternoon, so I would walk to the shiny, new engineering building and put on my blue labcoat. There I teach the students how to test different metals and do chemistry experiment! Once I was done, I would go back to my office and collect my belongings, speak to my lovely friend at the front desk and get a coffee. Before walking into Sheffield to get the bus.

Tell us a joke.
