A bacteria grows through something called ‘binary fission’. This is where one single parent bacteria splits into 2, making clones of itself. The bacteria makes a copy of it’s DNA then makes a copy of the rest of it’s body. It then splits the DNA, one DNA goes into one body and the other DNA goes into the other body. This means that when 1 bacteria splits into 2, the 2 ‘children’ have the same DNA (like when you have human twins).
What’s more, bacteria isn’t made – it grows!
We have millions of little bacteria inside our bodies and on our skin – we can’t see them without a microscope they are all so small! Some bacteria are really good for us – they can help us break down food. Some are harmful and can cause infections and make us really ill.
