      To see an animal cell we need to use a microscope. They can be 10 – 30 micrometres in size – that’s 1000 times smaller than a centimetre!!

      For reference, that’s less than half as thick as a human hair!

      Other scientists have already said the typical sizes, but there are some interesting exceptions – for example, some nerve cells are over a metre long (although still microscopically thin) and egg cells can be 0.12 millimeters across, much larger than any other cell in your body, since they have to split into many smaller cells to start making a new human!
