I was very very proud when I finished my Masters in Chemistry but my biggest achievement – should hopefully come tomorrow! I am about to sit the final exam (known as a viva) where I have to talk to two examiners about my research! I should pass and then I will be a Dr in Materials!
My biggest achievement was being able to study in London. I come from a smaller city in Scotland and from a family where almost no one has gone to university. My family didnt expect me to study my undergraduate at Edinburgh University and expected even less that I would go to london to do a PhD. It was just something that we all felt was for the smartest people and wasn’t really for people from lower income backgrounds, but that absolutely wasn’t true! If you work hard you really can go to whichever university you want to study whatever you want.
One of the things that felt like a series of big achievements was when the first student I taught got awarded their PhD, then get an academic job and then sent their first student to work with me for a few weeks.
I have a very proud moment every year when I get to see a group of students I have taught graduate from university and go on to find their own careers in forensic science. In a way – I have played a part in the success of each student I taught so every time they achieve something I feel proud too
