About Me:
Am often seen walking with my head down talking to myself! I am exploring how we can help the many around the globe, improve their ability to move, write or even simply touch others. To do this we record from muscles and then use this signal to make things like artificial hands move.
Grew up in India, studied in the UK then lived in New York city for many years and then came to Leeds. -

Live in Leeds in Yorkshire currently, lived and worked in many places around the world. Love to talk science but also do nothing sometimes.
Like to ask questions and then try and answer most of them myself, best I can.

Currently we are examining if we can tell how one would use their muscles to do a daily task like say pickup a cup of tea or use the knife, if all we knew is how they might squeeze a ball in their hand.
We want to then use this knowledge to design tools that allow us to use prosthetic hands without needing to learn to use them each time.
We have another project where we want to see if we can make muscles using fabric that will then work like human muscles. but be controlled using an app or by thought.

My Typical Day:
Spend most of my time looking into ways to find out what is happening in the spinal cord and brain of others and mine to then design or build artificial ones.

Wake up, grab a vat of espresso and begin my day.
Dream up ideas of how to understand why we move the way we do. Then get my students and others to test these ideas.
Then discuss with clinicians, engineers, artists and others how we can use this information to improve therapies, lives and make it easier for those with mobility issues to be independent.
