Antibiotics are drugs that help us to cure diseases caused by bacteria. Antibiotics can kill bacteria and help us to clear our body from the infection. Without antibiotics, even simple bacterial infections could kill us. Antibiotics have different ways to kill bacteria. For example, some antibiotics target the wall that is around bacteria while some could block the production of proteins in bacteria.
Unfortunately, bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics. This means that resistant bacteria can not be killed by antibiotics. Thousands of patients die every year because of antibiotic resistance.
My research is about antibiotics which stop the production of RNA molecules in bacteia. These molecules are very important for survival of bacteria. So, antibiotics that block RNA production kill bacteria. I am also interested in finding ways to kill resistant bacteria.
Recently, I discovered a new antibiotic that kills the bacteria that cause the deadly disease of Tuberculosis. It could possibly be used in the future to treat patients who have Tuberculosis.
