I only really discovered geology (or earth science) and volcanology when I went to University. It wasn’t a subject I could study in school (the little bit of geology that is in Geography is only the smallest taste of the subject). My lecturers at university were really enthusiastic and then after university I went to Hawaii to work as a volunteer, and saw a volcano erupting and that was it…. I had all these questions and saw all the scientists working hard to answer them and I knew I wanted to do research. I may still look at volcanoes (and they are still super cool) but I now work on all sorts of other things – but I still want to know how or why something happens.
