The flu is caused by a tiny, microscopic particle called a virus. When you get the flu, the virus gets into your body and uses it to make more of itself. It does this by getting into the cells of your lungs, and inserting instructions to make lots and lots of itself.

Whilst your lung cells start to make lots of flu virus, your body starts to fight it. This causes you to feel sick. You get a temperature, you feel really tired, and you start to cough and sneeze. When you cough and sneeze, the flu virus is fired out of your body on little drops of water. If someone else breathes in those droplets, they can then get sick with the flu the same way you did. Or, if the droplets land on a surface, and they touch that surface and then their face.

That’s why it’s important to wash your hands, and cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough!

The flu is a respiratory virus, meaning it attacks your throat, nose, and lungs. It is caught by introducing the germs responsible for it into your body. This can be by touching an infected surface and then touching your mouth or nose, or by someone coughing or sneezing very close to you. Corona isn’t a flu virus specifically, but it is quite similar, hence why we are washing our hands very regularly and wearing face masks when out and around other people.
