I think experiencing science is the best way to learn science!!!

Throughout my school life, I was always told that experience is key, however, it wasn’t always easy to get a hold of, especially in the field of science, synthetic biology, I started to become interested in during my final years of secondary school (sixth form). I believe synthetic biology will play a big part in our futures as a means of creating new ways for tackling global warming (in addition to other global issues like world hunger), so I would love to put the prize money towards giving students and the opportunity to get hands-on with synthetic biology and understanding its potential to create solutions to global problems!

I would also like to create visual resources which explain synthetic biology methods simply and the exciting things (like getting bacteria to make us foods, fuels and even antibiotics!!) we can do with synthetic biology!

Overall, I hope a combination of the two will help students to understand the possibilities of synthetic biology and hopefully encourage students to follow in my footsteps!

If you’re keen to learn more about what is synthetic biology, take a look at my “Meet the Scientists” profile!

I want to make ‘a crime scene in a box’. These would be forensic science kits that could be sent out to schools that contain all the equipment and instructions for teachers to set up their own scenarios in the classroom. They would be a variety of different crimes, giving students the chance to try out different types of forensic science such as dusting for fingerprints, casting footwear marks, blood pattern analysis and even a chance to study bones (with 3D casts). Once the mystery has been solved the school simply sends the box back to be restocked and sent on to another school.
